My partner Zach and I are new home owners. And it has been a HUGE adjustment, but we have slowly over the last two years come to absolutely love our little two bed 1 bath mid-century modern house. Having lived in it for awhile – We know now how we want to approach our renovation, and I’m so excited to have the blog up and running, that way I can share the process in detail. Our long term plans – Involve a full kitchen makeover and a 1000sqft extension that adds a primary bathroom! The only problem – We have exceptionally expensive taste, and this will be a project we work away at over many years. Unless by some turn of fate we come into some serious reno dough… It is what it is!
So how am I going to work toward my dream home goals?
Embarking on the journey to transform your current living space into your dream home is an exciting and fulfilling endeavor. In this blog post, I’ll share my plan and strategies for working towards my dream home renovation. From envisioning the changes to setting realistic goals, this roadmap is designed to turn dreams into tangible, achievable steps.
Vision and Inspiration: Before laying the foundation for your dream home renovation, it’s crucial to define your vision. What does your dream home look like? Collect inspiration from magazines, online platforms, or even create a vision board to visualize your ideas. This initial step serves as the creative spark that will guide your project.
Setting Clear Goals: Outline specific and achievable goals for your home renovation. Break down the project into smaller tasks, prioritizing them based on your vision and budget. Clear goals provide direction and help you stay focused throughout the process.
Budgeting Wisely: Establishing a realistic budget is key to a successful home renovation. Research the costs associated with materials, labor, and unexpected expenses. Factor in a contingency fund for unforeseen challenges. Creating a detailed budget ensures that your dream home remains financially feasible.
Research and Learn: Take the time to research the materials, designs, and renovation techniques that align with your vision. Understanding the various options available allows you to make informed decisions and ensures that your choices contribute to the longevity and functionality of your dream home.
DIY vs. Professional Assistance: Assess your skills and the complexity of the renovation project to determine which tasks you can tackle yourself and where professional assistance is needed. While DIY projects can save costs, certain aspects may require the expertise of skilled professionals to achieve the desired results.
Prioritizing Renovation Phases: Renovations can be overwhelming, especially when considering the entire home. Prioritize which areas or rooms to renovate first based on your needs and preferences. This phased approach allows you to witness progress and maintain a livable space during the renovation process.
Creating a Timeline: Develop a realistic timeline for your renovation project. Consider factors such as the availability of contractors, seasonal influences, and any events that may impact the schedule. A well-thought-out timeline keeps the project on track and minimizes disruptions to your daily life.
Documenting the Journey: Capture the different stages of your renovation journey through photos, videos, or a journal. Not only does this document the transformation, but it also serves as a reminder of the hard work and dedication put into achieving your dream home.
Embarking on a home renovation journey is a significant undertaking, but with careful planning and dedication, it can be a rewarding experience. By envisioning your dream home, setting clear goals, budgeting wisely, and taking a step-by-step approach, you are laying the foundation for a space that reflects your unique style and meets your aspirations. Stay focused, enjoy the process, and watch as your dream home unfolds before your eyes.
In the last year, I was super focused on investing in my wardrobe (read my blog post on this) but now that I feel I’m finally at a place where I’m happy with my closet, I want to spend my extra coin on improvements for the house. These could be small investments, like kitchen utensils, but I’m manifesting some larger investments too . Your girl has really needed dining chairs, and a king bed + mattress for example!
I know you’d think that being an interior designer – I would have the most insane place… But the truth is my own home is super humble, and in a constant state of “one day” . My focus and funds have been needed else where… And now that I’m finally in a place I plan on living for more than a few years, I’m ready to invest into my living space.
Your home is more than just a place to live; it’s an investment in your present comfort and future well-being. While many consider investments in stocks, real estate, or retirement accounts, investing in your home can bring both immediate and long-term benefits. In this blog post, we’ll explore why it’s important to allocate resources into improving and maintaining your home.
Enhanced Comfort and Quality of Life: Your home is your sanctuary, and investing in its comfort can significantly improve your daily life. Simple upgrades like energy-efficient appliances, comfortable furniture, or a well-maintained HVAC system can create a more enjoyable living environment.
Increased Property Value: Home improvements not only enhance your living space but can also increase the resale value of your property. Whether it’s a kitchen remodel, bathroom upgrade, or landscaping improvements, these enhancements can make your home more appealing to potential buyers.
Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings: Investing in energy-efficient features such as insulated windows, programmable thermostats, or solar panels can lead to substantial cost savings in the long run. Not only do these upgrades benefit the environment, but they also contribute to lower utility bills, making your home more sustainable and economical.
Preservation of Structural Integrity: Regular maintenance and timely repairs are essential for preserving the structural integrity of your home. Neglecting these aspects can lead to more significant issues over time, potentially costing more in extensive repairs. Investing in routine maintenance is a proactive approach to ensure your home stands the test of time.
Personalization and Aesthetic Appeal: Your home is a reflection of your personality and style. Investing in home decor, landscaping, or renovations allows you to personalize your space and create an environment that resonates with you. Aesthetically pleasing homes not only provide visual satisfaction but also contribute to a positive mental outlook.
Health and Well-Being: Indoor air quality, lighting, and the overall layout of your home can impact your health and well-being. Investing in features that promote a healthy living environment, such as air purifiers, natural light sources, and ergonomic furniture, can contribute to a better quality of life.
Adaptation to Changing Needs: As your lifestyle evolves, your home should adapt to accommodate those changes. Investing in renovations or modifications can ensure that your home remains functional and supportive of your evolving needs, whether it’s for a growing family, working from home, or aging in place.
So you see now, investing back into your home is not just a financial decision; it’s an investment in your lifestyle, well-being, and future. By prioritizing home improvements, you create a space that enhances your daily life, increases property value, and provides a sense of pride in homeownership. Whether through small upgrades or major renovations, these investments contribute to a home that not only meets your current needs but also stands as a valuable asset in the long run.
I so look forward to having this mindset this year and seeing what comes of it!
Love,
Lucy xx
